Water Optimization
Optimizing Water Management
Undoubtedly, water is a key input in our cement, ready-mix concrete, and aggregates production, as well as in the cleaning of plants, trucks, and equipment.
To optimize its use, our company has a comprehensive process that prioritizes sites with the highest water-related risks and the most significant commercial impact.
Developing Water Action Plans
In 2020, we conducted a study together with the University of Alcalá Foundation to update our water-stress map. We used a global online database and an interactive mapping tool called Aqueduct, which gave us information on risks related to water use worldwide.
This tool was developed by the World Resources Institute and allowed us to calculate the water stress index by grouping water risk indicators into 3 categories: physical quantity risk, quality risk, and regulatory and reputational risk.
More than 1,500 CEMEX sites, including cement, ready-mix concrete, and aggregates plants were analyzed for water availability and the result showed that about 16% of our sites are in areas with high or extremely high water stress. In addition, we were able to identify projected scenarios for 2030 and 2040 and highlight the importance of implementing action plans for these areas.
Water Action Plans (WAPs)
Our goal for 2030 is to develop Water Action Plans for 100% of sites in high and extremely high water stress areas.
These Action Plans are divided into 5 modules. Each has a set of objectives to optimize water use at our sites.
Through them, we offer response actions that maximize water use efficiency and mitigate specific water risks in each community by adopting recommendations based on the World Wildlife Foundation's "Water Risk Filter" tool.
