CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (NYSE: CX), announced today the release of “Oceans: Heart of Our Blue Planet” (“Oceans”), the latest edition of its conservation book series published in partnership with the International League of Conservation Photographers and Conservation International. The book is intended to raise awareness about the critical importance of our planet’s marine ecosystems. With its foreword written by H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco, a special tribute to the great oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, and a comprehensive introduction compiled by a distinguished group of scientists, “Oceans” offers a series of precise, scientific analyses of the diversity, economic importance and challenges faced by our planet’s marine resources. The book intends to connect the dots as to why human survival on Earth is directly linked to the ocean, offering innovative and creative solutions to those threats by some of today’s most respected and forward-thinking marine scientists.
“Oceans” couples the world’s leading experts in marine ecosystems together with world-renowned nature photographers to create an engaging and compelling piece of literature that conveys the beauty and wonder of our oceans, as well as the ever present threats to them. The book is a pictorial call to action on one of today’s most pressing conservation challenges and is powerfully illustrated with over 150 images by some of the world’s leading conservation photographers.
In the 19th edition of its conservation book series, CEMEX focuses on the exceptional feature that distinguishes our “Blue Planet” from others. Beyond the species that inhabit them, the oceans are essential to all living organisms on Earth. Thanks to the oceans, clouds and rainfall are produced, allowing vital water to reach all terrestrial ecosystems and human communities. The oceans support life on our planet by moderating Earth’s climate and producing 70 to 80 percent of the oxygen we breathe through the plants that inhabit marine ecosystems. At present, there are over 1.7 million living species, of which approximately 50 percent are marine organisms.
CEMEX is greatly honored to have published this new book in collaboration with such highly respected organizations as the Wildlife Conservation Society, National Geographic, Old Dominion University, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO), New England Aquarium, and Code Blue. Our collective goal is to engage readers and build awareness of the most critical issues affecting our oceans and our planet. With key illustrations, maps, and diagrams, this call to action aims to improve ocean governance and management practices that are fundamental to supporting the role our oceans play in the health and sustainability of the Earth.
CEMEX recognizes the value of our planet’s oceans. With this in mind, through the CEMEX Philippines Foundation we partnered with Conservation International to launch the Adopt-A-Species Program in 2007. Under this program, we spearheaded the adoption of the whale shark, (Rhincodon typus), a Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. As a second phase of the program, we partnered with the Batas Kalikasan (Law of Nature) Foundation to help revive the rich ecosystem of the Visayan Sea, which is situated in the Coral Triangle, acknowledged by international experts as the global center of marine biodiversity.
CEMEX will be hosting a webcast to present the book today Wednesday, November 30th at 11:00am ET (10:00am CST) to discuss all of this and much more. We hope you can join us for this unique experience at www.cemex.com
